Awful Black Mold
With the increase in environmental illnesses in the country one culprit stands out above the rest: black mold. Mold colonies are started by invisible mold spores that are in the air around us. The spores are dormant until the right circumstances apply - moisture, food supply and temperature - and then, like weeds, the mold forms.
Besides the smell mold growth in both residential and commercial buildings can be the cause of many serious health issues, especially for those that might have allergies. Allergens given off by black mold growth can cause discomforting symptoms like a running nose, watery eyes and sneezing. Other varieties can produce toxic, airborne chemicals that can cause serious health issues.
The first step in getting rid of mold is to find the source - usually a water leak- and fix this problem. Sometimes the water comes in from a leak in the roof or from a crack in the basement and gets the walls and carpet soggy. After this is sealed off the mold has to be eradicated.
Mold remediation is a skilled trade, one which continues to evolve as new methods and cleaning substances are found. It is extremely important to “chase” the mold back to it’s source and scrub out the colony, or colonies. Then a chemical washed over the surface to prevent the mold from returning. These mold teams treat the substance as they would toxic waste and come prepared with the proper clothing and breathing apparatuses.
