20 Ladder Rules

It wasn’t until lately that I ever knew anything concrete about ladders and ladder placement. A ladder was a tool that you tried to climb when you were 2 years old because it was a great way to change your perpspective. There were few, if any, rules about the anything to do with a ladder: you took it down off the hanger, you set it up against the building on firm ground, you climber it.

But every year ladders account for an increasing number of sever injuries and death. So here are a few pointers about ladders, some you may know and others you may not know:

  1. A rigid ladder should be leaned against a vertical wall or other structure at an angle of about fifteen degrees.
  2. When using an extension ladder against the eave of a home there should be a minimum of 3 rungs over the top of the roof.
  3. Do not make a ladder longer by setting it on boxes or other supports. Just get a longer ladder.
  4. Level the ladder on secure ground and test it before climbing.
  5. Never set a ladder in front of a door without a person watching for people coming in and out.
  6. Unless absolutely necessary don’t use set up a ladder on ice or snow.
  7. Always face a ladder when climbing.
  8. Re: bulky loads - Don’t care it. Go up first and set up a lift system, either a pulley or some way to get the load up.
  9. Never use a ladder around any wiring.
  10. Don’t move a ladder when you are on it by jostling with it.
  11. Never use a ladder as a walking platform
  12. Don’t use a ladder on a scaffold - make the scaffold go higher.
  13. Never use a step ladder over 20′ high.
  14. Never set up ladder when high winds are in progress.
  15. A ladder must be on a right angle to the surface and not leaned.
  16. Do not go higher than the second step from the top of a ladder.
  17. Don’t tie two ladders together to make one.
  18. Do not straddle a step ladder, with one foot on the front and one on the back.
  19. Always open a step ladder completely.
  20. The base of a long ladder should be anchored and, if possible, use anchor bolts to the wall of the structure with strong rope to the ladder.

Houses and Pests Don’t Mix

When it comes to getting rid of pests there are many options. Here are some tips from pest control contractors that work and will prevent them from returning to your home:

  1. pests, rodentsSort Garbage Properly: Rinse cans and bottles for recycling and place compostables in a sealed bag. This removes dome food and breeding areas. All garbage should be placed in sealed containers.
  2. Clean Cupboards: Remove everything from your cupboards and clean with an antibacterial soap. This will also remove food and breeding areas.
  3. Store Food Properly: Put flour, rice, pasta and all other perishables in sealed containers. Avoid spilling when closing the lids.
  4. Seal Cracks and Screens: Anything that light will shine through pests can get in too.
  5. Control Lights: Lights attract all insects. Put them on a motion detector with a timer. This way they will come on only when needed and insects will not congregate.
  6. Eliminate Dampness: Insects, mold and rot will inhabit any area of continued moisture. Your nose will be a great indicator of this. Remove rotted wood and replace with the pressure-treated kind.
  7. Regular Vacuuming: This will get at any insect nests and eggs and will prevent a build up of food for them.
  8. Sticky Traps: These work well for mice and insects. Place them in areas where pests are seen.

When it comes to getting rid of pests and keeping them out the saying, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” is the truth.
