The Pantry Returns

April 18, 2008

In our grandparents’ day getting to the store was not the daily event that it is now. The grocery list was planned well ahead of time and, in many cases, phoned in. The store clerk would assemble the order and deliver it to the home where the non-perishable goods and vegetables and flour items were taken to the room beside the kitchen called the pantry. If you lived in a rural area this might only be done four times a year and the key to this long-term storage was the pantry.

One of the main reasons for the return of the pantry is the lack of time. Unlike even ten years ago people just do not have the time to drive out to the store every day - or even every two or three days. However, the problem with buying so much is finding shelf room to store it, especially in the small kitchens of the 1950’s and 1960’s where pantries were excluded. Therefore new home designs are looking to pantries for storing food.

The myth is that you need either a large kitchen or another dedicated space to for a pantry. A pantry can indeed be an area or room off the kitchen for extended storage but it also can be any space in the kitchen that is underutilized.

So, the first step is to take stock of the kitchen cabinets and see if all the space is being used to optimum potential. Take out all the plastic containers, tupperware and specialty pots you seldom use and see what needs to be in the kitchen area. Next, go to the hardware store and look at all the cabinet attachments you can get to make use of all the space: sliding shelves, door hangers, LED lights.

If you still need space, look around to see where you can put a standing pantry cabinet. If you check with the bargain area of cabinet and homebuilding stores you might find one to match your kitchen. Another cheap way to gain space is to go to a second-hand furniture place and get an armoire. Again, you may find one to match.

However, if you have the time, money and room you can build onto the space and put in a great storage area: For more information go to Renovation Experts
