Hire or Do-It-Yourself?
We all have aspirations of the perfect living space and many actually achieve it. For those of us who want to get rid of our galley kitchen or expand the bathroom there is always the looming cloud of a budget on the horizon. We want caviar but can only afford meat loaf. That is why the home stores offer do-it-yourself courses and community colleges slate home improvement in their night school program.
This may add more knowledge and skill to your tool box for handyman jobs but are you really able to tackle a large project? Here are some items to consider when making this decision:
Time: What is your time worth? Can you take time away from family, business, down-time and other pressing chores to devote to a building project? Also, can you afford to have your home in upheavel for the time it takes to finish the job?
Professionalism: No one likes and hap-hazard job. Even the best amateurs hurry and hurry causes mistakes. And the one thing that rings true about a job that is not quite the way you anticpated is that it will be a thorn in your sign everytime you look at it.
Tools: You can rent tools if you don’t have them. But if you have to rent them you might not be used to how they work and this can lead to wasted time, money and bad workmanship. You might also get hurt.
Qualifications: Routing plumbing and electrical requires a license and so do other construction projects.
Safety: Contractors have all the safety gear and know how to use the stuff. Even the best scaffolding can come down in a hurry of it is not set up and blocked right.
